Increasing Carbon & Surviving in Drought

Featuring: Bruce Davison, Hugo Disler, Maarten Stapper

Hugo interviews Bruce to find out the history of the farm. Bruce and his wife, Heidi arrived at the farm with a clear plan to use worm juice as a fertiliser and to work with the principles of biological farming.

Instead of adopting the common practices of others they applied their logic to deal with weeds – in particular African lovegrass.

Their approach became their tool for surviving in drought. They have impressively increased the carbon in the soil and brix levels in the plants. They have also increased the pH in the soils and you can watch as Bruce demonstrates how he measures soil pH quickly and simply.

After lunch Bruce digs 2 soil pits to show the different soil and root structure under the 2 dominant weed species – African lovegrass and blackberries.

Bruce and Heidi have been recognised for their outstanding work by receiving several awards. This year they were named Champions of the Catchment in the Regional Landcare Awards
